This is a collection of personal notes about geo-information, work and study. I would like to explore a new ‘place’ for interaction in our field. My goal: maintain this blog for one year, we’ll see what happens after that (apart from graduating!).

I have been writing for a while, but not really included writing in my work. Writing things down is a good exercise for the mind. To be clear: I work as director of strategy at ESRI Nederland Group. Also, I am president of the Dutch society for geo-information, Geo-Informatie Nederland; I have been a member since college. The time it takes to have meetings for the society (approx a day a month) is donated by ESRI, the rest is spare time. This blog I write in my own time and it reflects my personal opinion.

What’s in a name? This blog’s title translates to “Shortest routes”. It relates to both geo-information and strategy. If you are only interested in distance, the shortest route really exists. But is short in relation to distance, time, or waiting time? The shortest route is hardly ever the most scenic one. Or the most interesting one. There are lots of shortest routes, we all choose our own. My route in regards to geo-information, work and study will be ‘blogged about’ here, mostly in Dutch.

Dit is een verzameling persoonlijke schrijfsels over geo-informatie,  werk en studie. Graag zie ik een nieuw podium voor interactie ontstaan in ons werkveld. Naast de evenementen en de tijdschriften kunnen we elkaar online ontmoeten. Mijn doel: een andere manier van communicatie testen en het een jaar volhouden. Daarna zien we wel verder.

Zelf schrijf ik al wat langer, maar ik houd dat vooral binnen de privésfeer. Af en toe wat opschrijven en eens terugblikken scherpt de geest. Voor de duidelijkheid: ik ben werkzaam als directeur strategie bij de ESRI Nederland Groep. Daarnaast ben ik voorzitter van Geo-Informatie Nederland, waarvan ik sinds mijn studietijd aan de HTS Utrecht (toen nog Kartografie) lid ben. De vergadertijd voor de vereniging (6x per jaar een dagdeel) stelt ESRI ter beschikking. Af en toe smokkel ik een uurtje. Deze blog schrijf ik in mijn eigen tijd.

What’s in a name? De titel Kortste routes heeft een link met geo-informatie en met strategie. Als je een pure interesse hebt in afstand alleen, dan bestaat die echt: de korste route. Maar kort is afhankelijk van je eigen ogen: kort in tijd? kort in afstand? kort in wachttijd?. De kortste route in afstand is zelden de mooiste. Of de meeste interessante. Er bestaande zo meerdere kortste routes, ieder kiest zijn eigen. Mijn route met betrekking tot geo-informatie, werk en studie zal hier een jaarlang worden beschreven.
